This lesson will demonstrate how to insert the Tobacco Starter Pick List if the Summary docuplate does not already contain the Starter Pick List.  This lesson will also describe how to use the Tobacco Starter Pick List.

The Tobacco field in the Summary chart section is used to record the past and present tobacco use history.

Summary Tobacco Field

The Tobacco field in the Summary is used to record the patient's past and present tobacco use history. This field is also used to record smoking status and tobacco cessation counseling for Meaningful Use.

With a patient chart open and the Summary chart section visible:

  1. Place the insertion point to the right of the field header.
  2. Left-click the mouse to insert the cursor.

If the bold green brackets appear (as shown above), then the field is active and ok to begin entering data.

To enter the pick list for Tobacco, type "smosta" into the Tobacco field then press the spacebar.

The Smoker Status pick list is used to record past and present tobacco use. This list is prepared by SOAPware to record tobacco use as structured data for Clinical Quality Measure NQF 0028 Tobacco Use Screening.

*Note: The first time this pick list is used, it must be downloaded from the SOAPware Online Library. To download the pick list, type "smosta" into the Tobacco field and Press Shift + F11 on the keyboard. Double-click on the appropriate item in the search results window to download the pick list to the database.

In SOAPware, text that appears Blue and Underlined indicates that a pick list is attached to the SMARText item.

  1. Left click on the pick list header Smoker Status.
  2. A list of items will appear in the SMARText Quick Access Dialog.

Click to check the box next to the most accurate description of the patients smoking status.

To get an accurate calculation for the Clinical Quality Measure NQF 0028 the Onset and Initial dates should be recorded.

Onset refers to the approximate date when the patient started smoking.  The Onset sub-item defaults to the current date and will need to be changed:

  1. Click Onset.
  2. Change the date by typing in the SMARText Quick Access window.

Initial Date refers to the date when the patient's smoking status was first recorded.

  1. Clicking the Initial Date sub-item will automatically insert the current date.
  2. If this date needs changing, do so by typing in the SMARText Quick Access window.

*Note:  If the Onset and Initial Dates do not appear, go to Tools > Options > Structured Dx and click to place a check in the boxes for these sub-items.
