Create Structured SMARText Items
Structured SMARText items may be created for direct insertion into a patient's chart. They can also be created to add to a pick list, bundle, cluster or toggle.
A few benefits of creating structured text items rather unstructured text include:
- Structured text able to be searched using the Data Explorer.
- Since structured text is easier to search, it may allow the user to be prepared for future Meaningful Use (MU) and Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) initiatives.
SMARText Items Manager

All SMARText items are created in the SMARText Items Manager.
To open the SMARText Items Manager, Click on Docutainers > SMARText Items. Or press F10 on the keyboard.
Create a Structured SMARText Item

Click on the green + button to create a new SMARText item.
SMARText Type Selection

- Select Structured Text
- Click Create
SMARText Designer: Structured SMARText Items

- Insert a Shortcut, (make sure this shortcut is easy to recall) Description and Keywords (be sure to always include a unifying keyword for searching purposes and separate keywords with a comma and a space). A display header is not needed for a Structured SMARText item.
- In the Item Settings box, under "Text (Singular), enter the text that should be displayed within the documentation when this strucutred SMARText item is entered.
- Click Save.
The structured SMARText item may now be entered directly into a patient's chart, or placed in a pick list, bundle, cluster or toggle. For an example of the latter, please refer to our Toggle lesson.
