Q: How should I respond to a controlled substance refill request?

A:  If the clinician is registered and has an active e-Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS) license, the clinician can respond to a controlled substance refill request using the same workflow as a non-controlled refill.  An extra security window will pop-up allowing the clinician to enter the password/security code to authorize the EPCS refill.

If the clinician is not registered and active with EPCS, approving refill requests for a controlled substance violates e-Prescribing laws.  When responding to the pharmacy, choose the response labeled "Deny/New Rx to follow" and print out the prescription by creating a new SOAP Note and providing the patient with a written script.
